BIRDWATCHING ON THE SUN COAST STATE PARK RESERVE

Tour description

The Sun Coast State Park (PECS) has a total area of 9,841 hectares of fragments of different environments, such as remnants of the Atlantic Forest and its associated environments in the coastal lowlands, such as forests, restingas, mangroves, lagoons and swamps.

Among the "restingas" of the Park is the enigmatic Restinga Antwren (Formicivora litorallis). The " com-com", as it is locally called, went unnoticed by many naturalists since the eighteenth century, being discovered only at the end of the twentieth century. Com-com is one of the most endangered species in the world because it inhabits only the narrow coastal strip of restinga between the municipalities of Maricá and Búzios.

Each environment has its rich associated birdlife. On the beach, birds such as Brown Booby, Magnificent Frigatebird, Cabot's Tern, Royal Tern, South American Tern, American Oystercatcher can be observed. The lagoons and its banks shelter birds such as Roseate Spoonbill, Osprey, Gray-hooded Gull, Kelp Gull, Neotropic Cormorant, White-backed Stilt, Black-necked Stilt, White-cheeked Pintail, Cocoi Heron, Little Blue Heron, Semipalmated Plover, Collared Plover, as well as Sanderling, Pectoral Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper and Ruddy Turnstone.

In the swamps, it is possible to observe the Crested Doradito, Copper Seedeater, Rusty-collared Seedeater, Ash-throated Crake, White-tailed Goldenthroat, Wing-banded Hornero, Unicolored Blackbird and Black-capped Donacobius.

In the restinga, the Restinga Antwren, Tropical Mockingbird, Plain-breasted Ground-Dove, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Moustached Wren, Black-backed Tanager, Red-legged Honeycreeper and Brazilian Tanager are the target species.

The Tataupa Tinamou, White-chinned Sapphire, Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Orange-winged Parrot, Sooretama Slaty-Antshrike, White-bearded Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Mouse-colored Tyrannulet, Fuscous Flycatcher, Lemon-chested Greenlet, Long-billed Wren and Hooded Tanager are some of the birds that can be recorded in the the "dry forests" of the Park.  And in the forest fragments adjacent to the Park can be found the Rusty-margined Guan, Rufous-thighed Kite, Black Hawk-Eagle, Plain-winged Woodcreeper, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Saw-billed Hermit, Grayish Mourner, Green-headed Tanager, Yellow-backed Tanager, White-bellied Tanager, Pileated Finch, Buff-throated Saltator, Violaceous Euphonia
